LightStream

Truist's low-rate lender for excellent credit

9/10
PricingAPR from 6.99% with autopay; typical borrower lands 8-14% APR

Advantages

  • Consistently publishes some of the lowest personal loan APRs on the market
  • Zero fees, no origination, no prepayment, no late
  • Rate Beat program cuts your rate 0.10% below a competing offer
  • Loans up to $100,000 with terms up to 12 years on some categories
  • Same-day funding available on approved loans

Drawbacks

  • Requires excellent credit, typically 700+ FICO with strong income history
  • No prequalification, hard credit pull on application
  • No consideration for thin-credit or non-traditional borrowers
  • Loan purpose affects rate, some categories priced higher

Upstart

AI underwriting for borrowers standard lenders overlook

7/10
PricingTypical borrower APR lands 12-28% after fees

  • Considers education, job history, and income potential beyond credit score
  • Prequalification uses soft pull, no impact on credit score
  • Fast decisions, many loans funded next business day
  • Loans from $1,000, useful for smaller borrowing needs

Drawbacks

  • Origination fees 0-12%, deducted from loan proceeds
  • Only 3 or 5 year terms, less flexibility than LightStream
  • Rates for near-prime borrowers can be much higher than mainstream lenders
  • Loan cap of $50,000, well under LightStream's ceiling
  • No cosigner allowed

LightStream and Upstart sit at opposite ends of the personal loan market. LightStream (part of Truist Bank) publishes some of the lowest APRs available and charges zero fees, but demands excellent credit. Upstart uses AI-driven underwriting that considers education and employment, which lets it approve borrowers with FICO scores well below what LightStream requires. Your credit tier almost entirely decides which one you belong at.

Our Verdict

LightStream Wins

LightStream wins for anyone with excellent credit. Upstart is the fallback when LightStream declines you or when your credit is thin.

LightStream's floor APR is the cheapest money in unsecured lending, and the absence of fees compounds the advantage over Upstart, whose origination fee alone can add 2-12 points to the effective cost. Upstart's real value is at the other end of the credit spectrum, where LightStream simply won't approve. If your FICO is under 680 or you don't have several years of credit history, Upstart's AI underwriting will often get you funded at rates that still beat credit cards.

LightStream is best forExcellent-credit borrowers hunting the lowest possible APR without fees
Upstart is best forNear-prime or thin-credit borrowers who value approval odds over rock-bottom pricing
